The Different Types of Acupuncture

The Different Types of Acupuncture

Acupuncture is commonly thought of as an alternative medical treatment. Though in the United States acupuncture is considered an alternative medicine, it is widely practiced throughout the rest of the world and is an extremely common practice in Chinese medicine.

It has been used in China's medical system since the 1930s. Most people imagine acupuncture as being stuck with needles in certain key areas to alleviate pain or cure other ailments. It is true that acupuncture involves needles being strategically placed on a person's body, but there are many varieties of acupuncture.

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)

This type of acupuncture not only involves acupuncture with needles, but also the burning of Chinese medicinal herbs. TCM in considered to be a holistic approach to medicine since it treats the whole person; not only the body, but also the mind and the spirit.

It is based on the concept of Qi (or Chi), which is believed to be a force of energy within the body that keeps the functions of the body, including organs, working properly. The Qi travels along the body on pathways called "meridians" with each one representing a certain body system or organ function. It is along these pathways that the acupuncturist places the needles.

The herbs used along with the acupuncture treatment aid in strengthening the body. These herbs can be used to help stop bleeding, fight a cold, and aid in digestion, for just a few examples. Normally, the herbs are used in combinations of three or more and can be taken in pill form, burned and inhaled, or in tinctures placed on the body during treatment.

Classical Acupuncture

Classical Acupuncture is the most common thought of type according to westerners. It is also known as the five element acupuncture. This type uses needles alone. It is also referred to as Classical Five Element Acupuncture because it corresponds to the seasons according to the Chinese cycle. This cycle includes:
Summer; Harvest; Fall; Winter; Spring

Not only does Classical Acupuncture correspond to the seasons, but also to the five elements found in nature as they relate to a person's body. These five elements are:
Fire; Earth; Metal; Water; Wood

Japanese Acupuncture

Japanese acupuncture is along the same lines as classical acupuncture, but this type uses smaller needles. It also focuses more on precision and efficient techniques that promote accomplishing bigger results using the smallest amount of stimulation possible.

Electro acupuncture

Like the name implies, electro acupuncture combines traditional acupuncture combined with a low electric current running through the needles and is becoming an ever-increasing popular form of acupuncture. Electro acupuncture uses the same meridians as classical acupuncture, but uses a small device that clips onto the needles. The device sends electric pulses that the acupuncturist can adjust depending on the intensity needed.

Unlike Japanese Acupuncture, electro acupuncture does not need to be so precise. The electric pulses stimulate a wider area making it easier to treat the area. Those who are squeamish about needles will prefer electro acupuncture because it can be done with electrodes instead of needles and attain the same results.

Medical Acupuncture

Medical acupuncture is very similar to classical acupuncture, but it is performed by a licensed medical doctor. It incorporates the medical science surrounding neuromuscular anatomy. Some also include historically Chinese acupuncture patterns; thereby, creating a hybrid of western and eastern medical knowledge.

Auricular Acupuncture

Auricular acupuncture is unique. This type treats the entire body, just like other types of acupuncture, but it does so through particular points located in the patient's ears. The acupuncturist pinpoints certain nerves found in the ear that relate to other parts of the body to help heal or alleviate pain in that particular part.

Auricular acupuncturists have over 200 acupuncture points to know on the outer ear. This is also called the pinna, more commonly known as the cartilage. Western auricular acupuncturists utilize a tool called an electro acupunctoscope, which is an electric tool. This is along the same lines as the electro acupuncture methods. This method is known as Transcutaneous Electical Nerve Stimulation (TENS).

Blood Cholesterol : Causes, Symptoms, and Remedies

Cholesterol, a yellowish fatty substance, is one of the essential ingredients of the body. Although it is essential to life, it has a bad reputation, being a major villain in heart disease. Every person with high blood cholesterol is regarded as a potential candidate for heart attack or a stroke. Most of the cholesterol found in the body is produced in the liver. However, about twenty to thirty per cent generally comes from the food we eat. Cholesterol is measured in milligrams per 100 millimetres of blood. The normal level of cholesterol varies between 150 - 200 mg per 100 ml. In blood, cholesterol occurs in combination with certain lipids (fats), hence, known as lipoptroteins. There are two main types of lipoproteins: a low density one (LDL) and a high density one (HDL). The low density lipoprotein is the one which is considered harmful and is associated with cholesterol deposits in blood vessels. The higher the ratio of LDL to the total cholesterol, the greater will be the risk of arterial damage and heart disease. HDL, on the other hand, plays a salutory role by helping remove cholesterol from circulation and thereby reducing the risk of heart disease.

Causes:

Hereditary:
Hypercholesterolaemia or increase in cholesterol is mainly a hereditary disorder.

Excessive consumption of rich foods:
It is also caused by taking rich foods and fried foods: excessive consumption of milk and its products like clarified butter, butter, and cream; white flour, sugar, cakes, pastries, biscuits, cheese, and ice cream; and non-vegetarian foods like meat, fish, and eggs.

Smoking, Drinking and Stress:
Other causes of increase in cholesterol are irregularity in habits, smoking and drinking alcohol. Stress has also been found to be a major cause of increased level of cholesterol.

Symptoms of High Blood Cholesterol:

Following are the major high blood cholesterol symptoms:

1. General fatigue
2. Excess sweating and feel of uneasiness
3. Pain and heaviness in chest area
4. Breathlessness

Home Remedies:

High Blood Cholesterol treatment using Lecithin:
Lecithin, also a fatty food substance and the most abundant of the phospholipids, is beneficial in case of increase in cholesterol level. It has the ability to break up cholesterol into small particles which can be easily handled by the system. With sufficient intake of lecithin, cholesterol cannot build up against the walls of the arteries and veins. Lecithin also increases the production of bile acids made from cholesterol, thereby reducing its amount in the blood, Egg yolk, vegetable oils, wholegrain cereals, soyabeans, and unpasturised milk are rich sources of lecithin. The cells of the body are also capable of synthesizing it as needed, if several of the B vitamins are present.

High Blood Cholesterol treatment using Vitamins:
Vitamins B6, choline, and inositol are particularly effective in reducing the level of blood cholesterol. Wheat germ, yeast, or vitamin B extracted from bran contain high quantities of these vitamins. Vitamin E also elevates blood lecithin and reduces cholesterol. The patient should take liberal quantities of vitamin E-rich foods such as sunflower seeds, safflower, soyabean oils, butter, and sprouted seed and grains.

High Blood Cholesterol treatment using Coriander Seeds:
Regular drinking of a decoction of coriander seeds helps lower blood cholesterol. It is a good diuretic and helps stimulate the kidneys. It is prepared by boiling two tablespoons of dry seeds in a glass of water and straining the decoction after cooling. This decoction should be taken twice daily.

High Blood Cholesterol treatment using Fibre:
The amount of fibre in the diet also influences the cholesterol levels and LDL cholesterol can be lowered by taking diets rich in fibres. The most significant sources of dietary fibre are unprocessed wheat bran, whole cereals such as wheat, rice, barley, rye; legumes such as potatoes, carrots, beet, and turnips, fruits such as mangoes and guavas; and leafy vegetables such as cabbage, ladys fingers, lettuce and celery. Oat bran and corn bran are specially beneficial in lowering LDL cholesterol.

Female smokers may Increase Risk of Breast Cancer

Written By Febby Indra on Wednesday, October 19, 2011 | 4:09 AM

Smoking was not just a trigger diseases related to respiratory tract. Recent studies show women smokers at greater risk of breast cancer, especially if they are already a smoker since a young age.

Although the risk is likely to be small, but women smokers are at risk of 6 percent higher breast cancer compared with nonsmokers. Women who spend a pack of cigarettes every day over a period of 30 years the risk jumped to 28 percent.

'Smokers may not be not the main factor of breast cancer, but when we see a woman in the group of heavy smokers and had smoked since he was young, it becomes a serious matter,' said Karin Michels, Ph.D., cancer epidemiologist and Obgyn from Harvard Medical School conduct this research.

Previous studies on the effect of smoking on breast cancer produce a balanced outcome. Some studies concluded that smoking increases the risk, but some will not find a link.

Tobacco smoke contains thousands of materials or substances, including chemicals, gas, and droplets of tar-tetasan. However, smoking is known to reduce levels of estrogen, one of the triggers of breast cancer. 'That's why some studies found no link between smoking and breast cancer, "said Michels.

In his research, Michel and his team studied 110 000 women who had 30 years to be smokers. In general, there are 8772 respondents who had breast cancer during the study period.

Those who had become smokers, at least before the first child, the risk of breast cancer is higher. Gave birth to a baby known to protect women from breast cancer, suspected this because of the changes that occur in breast tissue.

'The risk of breast cancer is greater in periods of hormonal transition, for example premenapause and post-menopausal period when there was a variety of changes in hormone function,' said Joanne Mortimer, MD, director of the Women's Cancer Program. He was not involved in this research.

In fact, women who smoke have an increased risk of post menopasue smaller than nonsmokers to have breast cancer. This is because people who have menopause, and smokers have lower estrogen levels.
